Salt – a special seasoning

Graduation house

In everyday parlance, graduation houses are known as salt works, which makes everyone think of tingling fresh air and the slight taste of salt on your lips. This landmark of many German spa resorts originally formed part of the salt extraction facilities.

In places with natural brine springs, but with insufficient area to allow the water to evaporate, these constructions, which were developed in Lombardy, replaced the horizontal salt meadows. The salt content of the natural brine, which was usually only 8 - 10%, was increased to 25% by means of evaporation. As the salt content was stated in degrees (German: Grad), the degree of salt in the brine was increased and hence came the name graduation house.

Around 1800 salt production by means of graduation houses was no longer of any great significance, but the healing effect of the salty air had been discovered. Our graduation house invites you in to linger awhile and relax in the salt-enriched air at a pleasant temperature.

The graduation house is ideal for regenerating your entire breathing apparatus and is particularly beneficial for the lungs. A stay of up to an hour is recommended.
